Popular culture is an item, tangible or intangible, that is
recognized by most of the population. Popular culture is important to people
because it is a way for them to identify and belong to society. From childhood,
we have things that mean something to us. For me, it was My Little Pony,
Barbie, Popples, and Strawberry Shortcake toys; Backstreet Boys, NSync, and
Eminem music; chatrooms; Stand by Me, Rudy, and Neverending Story movies;
X-Men, Archie, and Flinstone’s comics; Flinstone’s, Jetson’s, and Punky
Brewster TV shows.
I can see an understanding of popular culture important in a
business environment if someone is marketing an item or teaching. Marketers
would need to know how to promote the product to people in order for them to
want to buy the product. Teaching is also the same concept, teachers would want
to have an understanding of popular culture to identify with the students which
would help them connect and teach better. My present career is nonexistent, I
am a stay-at-home mom right now so the only way that popular culture applies to
that is what my kids are going to want for their birthdays and Christmas. My
future career is in accounting. An understanding of pop culture is important to
accounting because an accountant needs to be current on the latest or most
popular accounting technology.
An example of a pop
culture artifact would be comic books. Comic books have been around for many
years and continues to go strong today. I chose comic books for the example
because it is something that I remember wanting when we would go to the store
and my children are interested in as well. Comic books are so big that they
have multiple comic store locations across the world and they even have their
own “holiday” known as Free Comic Book Day.
Well I officially learned something new today! I had no idea there was "Free comic book" day! I guess having young kids I better get with the program! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with how pop culture impacts business because of marketing and needing to know the market and the needs of the consumers!
Hollywood has recently (when I say “recently” I actually mean within the past 15 years) grasped upon the ever growing popularity of comic books. The characters and stories of these comics have created an ever changing canvas allowing the creation of popular television shows (Smallville, Gotham, Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D., The Walking Dead, and Gotham) and movies (Man of Steel, Batman, The Avengers, and Captain America). These movies are so popular they have set record breaking profits. This was one reason why Disney decided to purchase Marvel Studios from Marvel Comics. Without a doubt in my mind comic books have become a huge part of popular culture over the past 75 years and is continuing to gain momentum.
ReplyDeleteYour present career is very existent. As a past stay-at-home mom, I believe that pop culture is ever existing, especially when it comes to how we raise our children, how stay at home moms should take care of themselves, etc. Have you noticed the magazines and websites that are all about moms? It is a pop culture in itself and always changing with the times.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I love comic books!!!! Always have since I was a kid myself as well.
I can see how accounting would not be affected by popular culture. Knowing the current programs, the methods of or acceptable practices of accountants, and how you can use them every day seems more a pursuit of high culture. High culture values knowledge, whereas pop culture values forgetfulness. Proven by the cyclical nature of music, media, and TV shows. The only value I can see in popular culture for your degree would be for your children and for casual work conversations.
